Road Trip Fuel Cost Calculator

Estimate road-trip fuel cost and split it between passengers. Use kilometres and litres, or miles and US gallons, with your own local fuel price.

Example inputs only. Enter your actual route, consumption and local fuel price. Changing units resets these example inputs; changing currency does not convert prices.

The fuel-cost formula

For metric inputs: distance × litres per 100 km ÷ 100 × price per litre. For US units: miles ÷ miles per gallon × price per gallon. Divide the total by the number of people sharing the cost.

Example: 500 km at 7 L/100 km uses 35 litres. At €1.70 per litre, fuel costs €59.50, or about €14.88 each for four people. Individual displayed shares are rounded, so their sum can differ from the total by a cent or two.

What the estimate leaves out

Traffic, terrain, luggage and driving conditions affect consumption. This is a fuel-only estimate, not a live price lookup. It excludes charging for electric vehicles, tolls, parking, rental fees and wear. US gallons are not imperial gallons.

Use the trip budget calculator for the whole trip, the cost splitter for repayments, and our road-trip cost guide to agree what is shared.

Common questions

Should I enter one-way or return distance?
Either enter the total route distance and leave the return box off, or enter one-way distance and tick the box to double it. Do not do both.
Does choosing a currency convert the price?
No. Currency controls how the result is displayed. Enter a fuel price in that currency yourself.
