Autumn City Break Packing List: What to Bring for Unpredictable Weather
How to pack for a city break in autumn: layers that handle a 10-degree swing, shoes that survive rain, and a carry-on-friendly list for three to five nights.
Quick answer
- Autumn days can swing 10°C between morning and afternoon, so pack layers rather than one warm coat.
- Water-resistant shoes you can walk in all day matter more than any other item.
- A packable rain jacket and a compact umbrella cover most autumn showers.
- Three to five nights fits in a carry-on if you build outfits around two neutral colours.
- Check your destination's plug type before you go: an adapter is the most commonly forgotten item.
Autumn is one of the best times for a city break: smaller crowds, lower prices and cities that feel lived-in rather than staged. It’s also the hardest season to pack for. Mornings can be cold, afternoons surprisingly warm, and rain is never far away. The answer isn’t packing more, it’s packing things that adapt.
Plan for the swing, not the average
An autumn forecast of “14°C” hides a range that might run from 7°C at breakfast to 17°C mid-afternoon. Packing for the average leaves you cold in the morning and overheating by lunch. Instead, pack layers you can add and remove:
- Base: long-sleeve tops in breathable fabrics
- Mid layer: a light knit jumper or fleece
- Outer: a packable waterproof jacket
- Accessory: a scarf, which is the easiest warmth-per-gram you can carry
Four layers worn in combination cover far more conditions than one heavy coat.
Shoes matter most
You’ll walk more on a city break than on almost any other trip, often 15,000 to 25,000 steps a day, and in autumn some of that will be on wet cobbles. Bring one pair of water-resistant shoes you’ve already worn in. New shoes on a walking holiday are the most reliable way to ruin day two.
If you want a second pair, make it something smarter for the evening rather than another pair of trainers.
Rain without the misery
- Packable rain jacket that folds into its own pocket
- Compact umbrella for heavier showers and waiting outdoors
- A day bag that closes, so your phone and documents stay dry
- One spare pair of socks in your day bag, for when the shoes lose the fight
Building a carry-on wardrobe
Three to five nights fits comfortably in a carry-on if everything works together:
- Pick two neutral colours (navy and grey, black and beige) and make every item match both
- Wear your bulkiest layers on the plane: jacket, jumper and walking shoes
- Plan one smarter outfit for a nice dinner, and let everything else be casual
- Pack one pair of socks and underwear per night, plus one

Don’t forget the plug
The single most forgotten city-break item is a travel adapter, and plugs differ more than people expect, even inside Europe. The UK, Ireland, Malta and Cyprus use type G, most of the EU uses types C, E and F, and Switzerland and Italy have their own sockets. Use our travel plug & voltage finder to check exactly what you need before you go.

Frequently asked questions
What should I wear for a city break in autumn?
Layers. A long-sleeve top, a light knit or fleece, and a packable waterproof jacket let you adjust as the day warms up and cools down again. Add a scarf for cold mornings and evenings, and wear water-resistant shoes you can walk in for the whole day.
Do I need a heavy coat for an autumn city break?
Usually not, at least until late autumn in northern and central Europe. A warm mid layer under a waterproof shell is more flexible than a heavy coat, takes less space, and handles rain better. In November, or for cities like Oslo, Prague or Kraków, a warmer insulated jacket is worth bringing.
Can I pack for an autumn city break in a carry-on?
Yes, for three to five nights. Wear your bulkiest items on the plane (jacket, jumper, walking shoes), build outfits around two neutral colours so everything mixes, and limit yourself to one pair of spare shoes at most.
What is the most forgotten thing on a city break?
A travel adapter. Plug types differ between countries even within Europe: the UK, Ireland, Malta and Cyprus use a different plug from the rest of the EU, and Switzerland and Italy have their own sockets. Check your destination before you leave.
